Out of all the artists I have studied throughout the first semester, the artist that made a lasting impression and impact was Maija Fiebig. She is a botanist artist who started recently a few years ago in 2007. Unlike other well-known artists, she views painting as an “escape.” Before each session, she would get inspiration from everyday life and visualize them in her head. Often pondering about nature, she would think about how parts of the nature, like the tress or the leaves, would flow with the painting.
Shuffling through her early works in her profile, her work “Suki” from the year 2007 stood out to me exceptionally, which I chose to imitate as my front cover. The prevalent color red blended perfectly with the neutral rose color, while occasionally leaving clear spaces for organic figures to steal your focus. However, that was not what caught my attention the most; it was the intricate, detailed patterns placed delicately where they should be, providing the piece with a traditional feeling.
Overall, I am most impressed by a patience and skill, along with her composition. Her style is consistent among all of her other works, with motifs such as the bubble-like irregular shapes and the dotted details. It almost seemed as if there was no foreground or background, and only a collage of beautiful shapes and color. In addition, even when only working with a single medium, her extreme technical skill allowed her to create a tone and gradient when needed, adding to the general calming atmosphere of the piece.
